Tate & Lyle's Sugar Refinery was located on the western side of the Millwall Dock inner basin, just to the east of Alpha Grove. The site, which had previously been used for sugar processing, was acquired by Tate Lyle in 1964. Investment in new brown sugar production plant and tanker-lorry facilities was made in 1982-4 and road access to the site shifted to the newly formed Mastmaker Road. The refinery closed in 2001 and the speciality syrups plant was moved to the factory at Silvertown. The site was subsequently redeveloped for housing.
